The ancient practice of drumming is gaining in popularity at senior communities and has recently been introduced at The Peninsula.
The assisted living and memory support community in Hollywood now is offering an hour-long rhythm based drum circle for residents.
While considered a therapeutic program, drumming helps residents connect through rhythm. Dating back to ancient times the use of drum circles has been used by many cultures to promote healing and self-expression.
“At The Peninsula residents consider the drumming circle simply fun, something new and entertaining,” said Scott Dell the instructor and owner of Bambam Drumfun.
Residents gather together in a circle while Scott takes residents through a brief warm up and practice session to get used to the technique and rhythm. Everyone has drumsticks and a wood tile for a tapping surface. Then the music starts and they beat together to tunes of the 50’ and 60’s.
Research indicates that drumming accelerates physical healing; boosts the immune system and produces feelings of well-being, he explains. The benefits are rather amazing and include focus concentration, social engagement, hand-eye coordination, sharpening motor skills, reducing, boosting energy, and exploring creative expression, he explains.
Studies have also shown that drumming reduces tension, anxiety and stress as drumming induces relaxation and lowers blood pressure; helps control chronic pain; produces deeper self – awareness; offers a connections with others; and provides an outlet for emotional release.
“Regardless of our residents’ abilities or limitations, the drumming circle provides a wonderful equalizer,” said Michelle Hertz, resident program coordinator. “They enjoy the interaction with others. Everyone is able to make music. You can see the smiles on their faces as they enjoy the rhythmic beating and feel the rhythm.”
