The community makes this time of year extra special by creating the warmth of home with holiday celebrations and traditions.
“We know how important social activities are which commemorate each season,” said Susan Hernandez, associate executive director.
Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are particular favorites of our Food and Beverage Director James Duberry. These holidays offer an opportunity to prepare residents’ favorite recipes as well as introduce new menu items.
Holiday dining is served during the afternoon when families enjoy visiting. On Thanksgiving Day, his team prepares wonderful selections for a traditional and tasty feast. Not only is turkey and ham served but a tropical fish prepared with a piccata sauce is also a selection. There will be classic side dishes including baked sweet potatoes casserole and buttery mashed potatoes along with green beans almandine. Of course, desserts include pumpkin pie and ice cream but he’ll also offers his special sweet potato pie along with apple and cherry fruit pies.
To celebrate the first night of Hanukkah, Chef James prepares fried potato pancakes known as ‘latkes.” These delicious treats are cooked in oil to remind people of the miracle of the holiday, known as the Festival of Lights. He’ll also serve beef brisket and roast chicken. Desserts are holiday inspired as well and include honey cake and jelly rolls.
Christmas offers a similar dressed up menu of scrumptious comfort foods while New Year’s Eve takes a more elegant twist with steak and lobster tails.
Entertainment and crafts also reflect the holidays and residents enjoy the holiday spirit each day. There is plenty of caroling of holiday favorites too with many visiting children’s groups and church choirs.
For residents’ convenience, many of our monthly vendors participate in an annual holiday bazaar with wonderful items for sale geared to holiday shopping.
On the calendar is the traditional scenic drive to many of the lighted neighborhoods in the Hallandale Beach.
We know that many residents may not have their families nearby to visit during the holidays. We take extra care in making sure their days are filled with a variety of activities and social events. The comfort of being with friends, neighbors and staff may not replace families but certainly helps in celebrating the holidays together.
